Rite Aid Calif City
Type: Commercial – Retail Pharmacy
Building Method: Slab on grade, masonry, panelized roof
This Rite Aid drug store located at the busy intersection of California City Blvd and Hacienda Blvd. in California City is one of the standard store designs that Rite Aid uses around the country. This store in California City is almost identical to one that we built in Burbank as well. The construction consists of a slab on grade with continuous spread footings. The main structure of the building is masonry walls with some decorative parapets and entry structures. The roof structure is a typical panelized roof system using wood and steel truss girders with plywood panel roof deck. The roof is a single ply type system to minimize weight and also allow for reflective roof surface to keep the store cooler on hot days. The interior of the building is basically a large open space with vinyl floor tile and suspended acoustic tile ceiling with fluorescent lighting laid out to conform to the shelving layout that would be installed by another vendor. There were some existing buildings on the site that needed to be demolished and then the soil under the building needed to be over-excavated, ie, since it was too soft to place the building the top layer of soil is removed down to five feet deep and then the soil is placed back in the hole and compacted back up to the level of the subgrade for the building. Many large retailers want designs with the minimum number of columns and prefer structural systems that provide minimal columns similar to Pre-engineered metal buildings or long span trusses.
